Join us at the historic Latchis Theater on January 28th at 6PM for a community screening of The Cure for Hate, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
For the survivor who chooses to testify, it is clear: his duty is to bear witness for the dead and for the living. He has no right to deprive future generations of a past that belongs to our collective memory. To forget would be not only dangerous but offensive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.” Nobel Peace Prize Winner – Eli Weisel
About the film – The Cure for Hate
A former Skinhead and Holocaust denier, Tony McAleer, travels to Aushchwitz/Birkenau in the spirit of teshuvah. McAleer, profoundly aware and deeply ashamed of the lineage of hate he once promoted, felt the need to bear witness to the inconceivable ravages of the Holocaust and deepen his work against the rise of extremist politics. First a book and now a film, The Cure for Hate documents McAleer’s personal journey of atonement while also exploring the conditions that allowed for the rise of fascism in 1930’s Europe. The film also sheds a unique light on how people get into, and out of, violent extremist groups, serving as a cautionary tale of our time about the dangers in allowing hate to go unchecked.
On Monday, January 29, the filmmakers will meet with PeaceJam students to discuss the film. Read Annie Landenberger’s article about the film in The Commons.
Given current events, the importance of this program cannot be understated. With hate crimes and hate group activity in ascendancy, and an alarming vitriolic shift in public discourse around issues of race and nationalism, the question so many seem to be asking is “how did we get here, and how do we turn back the tide?”
