The Breakdown of the Transatlantic Alliance
The Trump Administration has made it clear that the United States will no longer support Europe’s security, a cornerstone of bipartisan foreign policy for 80 years. Furthermore, by voting with authoritarian states at the United Nations and publicly shaming Volodymyr Zelenskiy at an Oval Office visit, the United States is no longer a reliable ally to democracies around the world. The European Union is now racing to create its own security arrangements and support Ukraine.
Was this development long overdue or a shocking departure? How does it change geopolitics and the US’ role as a great power going forward? If we are moving from alliances to spheres of influence, does that bode ill or well? Do spheres of influence even work?
Our Salons are a perk of membership and a bit different from our regular speaker events. They are a chance to participate in an informal, off-the-record group discussion. The value of these forums has only grown since the inauguration, as we navigate a rapidly changing world together. This time, we are thrilled to be talking about The Breakdown of the Transatlantic Alliance, with special guests Bob Beck and Peter Galbraith.
It will not be a lecture — instead, we’ll gather as a community to help each other process the shifting world order, with the help of these two experienced foreign policy experts.
- Bob Beck (Peterborough, NH) served 30 years overseas with the U.S. government, working in embassies across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
- Peter Galbraith, a Windham World Affairs member, is an author, academic, commentator, politician, policy advisor, and former diplomat to Croatia and East Timor.
Feel free to share this invite with your friends & family. Refreshments will be served.
